Prompt Engineering

Make any LLM do what you actually want — reproducibly, in production.

What is it?

Prompt engineering is the discipline of designing inputs to a language model so that the output is reliable, structured, and fits a specific job. In 2026 it overlaps heavily with **context engineering** — what the prompt does is only one of five context sources (system, retrieval, history, tools, query) — but the prompt remains the most direct lever you control. The mature practice is not 'find a clever phrase'; it is 'write a prompt, build a 30-case eval set, measure precision/recall against a rubric, regress when the model updates'.

Who needs it?

Applied GenAI Engineer

Every LLM feature you ship starts with a prompt. The difference between demo-grade and ship-grade is almost always prompt + eval discipline, not the model.

AI Product Manager

You spec the desired behavior. Knowing how prompts shape output (and where they fail) lets you write requirements that engineering can actually meet.

AI Solutions Architect

Customers ask "can the model do X?". The honest answer often depends on prompt structure and context budget — both prompt-engineering questions.

You build a 20-case eval set with adversarial inputs, score outputs against a rubric (exact match, JSON-validity, regex), and iterate on a prompt with measurable improvement. You handle prompt injection at the input boundary.

You design prompt systems with caching, fallbacks, model routing, and per-request budget caps. You run regression diffs against the prior prompt version on every change. You catch silent regressions before they ship.

Expert Week 3–6 months

You operate prompt engineering as a continuous practice: shadow eval against new model versions, automated prompt optimization (DSPy or in-house), per-segment prompt tuning, and a written prompt-quality SLA your team holds itself to.
